East Coast Environmental Law

is an environmental law charity based in Halifax that provides public-interest environmental law services throughout Atlantic Canada.

Since 2007, collaboration between East Coast Environmental Law and MELAW has provided students at the Schulich School of Law with practical opportunities to apply their knowledge of environmental law and to connect with members of the public, community groups, and non-governmental organizations in Atlantic Canada. Students who work or volunteer with East Coast Environmental help the organization fulfill its mandates to:

  • provide environmental law information, advice, and support to members of the public, community groups, and non-governmental organizations in Atlantic Canada;
  • conduct legal research, analysis, and advocacy to support progressive law reform; and,
  • mentor new generations of law students and environmental lawyers in training.

The East Coast Environmental Law team values the contributions made by students each year. East Coast Environmental Law staff are also thankful for participation and support by MELAW faculty members—several of whom are past or current members of the Board of Directors—and administrative staff. Together, we collaborate to provide meaningful opportunities for law students who want to learn about practicing environmental law in the public interest and who want to use their legal research and writing skills to advance environmental and climate justice.
